Absolute Creatures: A Zine About Thru-Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail

By Sarahmarie Specht-Bird in Hiking

84 pages, published 3/2/2023

The story of a long hike on a beautiful trail with cool people. Absolute Creatures is 84 pages and 25,000 words about my 2022 thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. Told through the lens of my “tramily,” or “trail family,” the zine is a brief but beautiful romp through mountains, desert, snow, heat, wildfires, and the most beautiful sunsets. Includes art by Amelia Cleveland and 11 pages with full-color photos from the trail.

Absolute Creatures is the story of my PCT thru-hike in 2022, organized into five major sections: one for each of the original members of my tramily.

Blaze: A Zine About Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Blaze was my post-thru-hike project after I completed the AT in 2019. It is a collection of 14 vignettes, one for each state on the trail. The stories are accompanied by original artwork from my friend, artist Amelia Cleveland. Learn more about Blaze by clicking the button below.

QuaranZine

In the spring of 2020, I got a group of friends together—remotely—to create a collaborative zine full of poetry, short essays, drawings, and photography that captured the uncertainty of the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. 100% of the proceeds have been sent to the WHO COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and the Navajo and Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund.

This zine is available in a digital format. You can learn more about QuaranZine and purchase a copy by clicking the link below.
